MOFI-Sigma11 Fully Discrete Regulated Power Supply (Single Rail 5-36VDC)

🌟 The MOFI-Sigma11 (S11) Regulated Power Supply combines advanced engineering with DIY project appeal. Designed for enthusiasts and professionals alike, this power supply kit or finished board offers a unique platform to create high-performance power solutions.

Project Overview:

⚡ This project necessitates a high level of electronics comprehension and considerable hands-on experience in soldering and assembly. While we provide a robust product introduction, please note that technical support is limited. As such, problem-solving will largely be your responsibility.

🔧 Design Features:

🔴 The MOFI Sigma11 is centered around an all-discrete topology, leveraging a single-pass, series regulator design that eliminates the need for integrated circuits (ICs). This distinctive approach results in:

  • Low noise levels and high Power Supply Rejection Ratio (PSRR)
  • A constant-current source feeding a zener diode, establishing a stable voltage reference
  • An efficient low-pass filter with a corner frequency of 1.6Hz to minimize zener noise interference, enhancing the overall performance
  • A discrete error amplifier boasting a high open-loop gain of 102.5dB, which greatly boosts line regulation capabilities

💍 The error amplifier comprises a sophisticated long-tailed pair differential amplifier, complete with current mirror and constant current sources, ensuring exceptional accuracy and performance throughout various operating conditions.

High-Current Capability:

🧩 The power supply is equipped with high-current MOSFET pass transistors, offering significant safety margins against overcurrent scenarios and providing an impressive output of up to 0.3A continuously, with peak currents reaching up to 2A. For sustained usage at higher currents, larger offboard heatsinks can be implemented. The MOSFETs’ negative temperature coefficient design effectively mitigates the risk of thermal runaway, a common concern in conventional BJT devices.

Output Voltage Range:

Typical output voltages available with the Sigma11 include: 5V, 9V, 10V, 12V, 15V, 18V, 24V, 27V, 30V, and 36V, with additional voltages possible upon request.

Configurations:

🔴 The Sigma11 is offered in two configurations: a DIY Kit, which includes the PCB and all necessary components (excluding the power transformer), and a Finished Board, which has been thoroughly tested and validated using voltage checks along with signal generator and oscilloscope analysis. The finished board comes fully assembled, hand-soldered with meticulous attention to detail, yet is priced higher than the DIY kit, which is ideal for cost-sensitive consumers with the requisite DIY skills.

Schematic and Installation:

🔧 The included PCB features component parameters for user-friendly installation. The DIY kit provides a perfect introduction to hands-on electronics assembly, where care should be taken to solder from the bottom of the board through the plated holes, promoting durability and reliability.

Typical Applications:

The input voltage requirements can be calculated as follows: VAC = (Output voltage + 8) / 1.414. This means for a 12VDC output, a 15VAC input voltage should be selected, while other configurations are also available depending on output voltage needs.

Parts List:

🪶 The kit and finished board come complete with a comprehensive parts list for your convenience, ensuring you have everything needed for successful assembly and operation.

Whether you opt for the DIY kit or the finished board, the MOFI-Sigma11 provides an engaging experience in building and utilizing a high-quality, regulated power supply suited for various applications.
